Hi Michele We will be spending our first night in cashel,A Friday.Saturday we will be going to Kinsale via Cahir. We would like to drive the vee but we are not sure how long this route would be.What is a realistic time with the usual photo op stops. If we leave Cashel around 10 and spend around 2 hours in Cahir, what is your best guess at what time we would get to Kinsale.
I keep looking at N8 on the map,but I would hate to miss so much of the country side.
Drive time alone will take about 3 1/2 hours. I suggest you avoid Cork City and take the Cross River Ferry from Cobh to Carrigaline and then rural roads to Kinsale. That will save lots of time stuck in Cork traffic or lost (very confusing city).
There are, of course, other interesting things to see along the way such as Lismore Castle Gardens and The Queenstown Story in Cobh. Plan on getting to Kinsale in the early evening. If you think you will arrive after 6pm let your lodgings know.
There is another drive south of Lismore that is worth the time. You need to make a left (as you come from the north) just past the tidy toilets and follow a road that you would never meant to be bidirectional and then turn right just before you get to the big school (I think) on the left. How's that for Irish directions. I should move there. Anyway, that road follows the backwater river down to the N25 just outside of Youghal (whose pronumciation is Yawl and it still makes my wife laugh when she remembers me butchering the pronunciation to a truck driver).
Cobh is certainly worth a visit and the ferry is a nice option. That said, I've been able to pass around Cork on the southern "beltway" with relative ease the last couple of time's I've tried. I imaging it would be a mess at rush hour. Saturday midday was a breeze.
Hi Susan: I'm afraid nothing terribly painful happened to me on this trip and there was minimal embarrassment. The task begins now to sort through all of the pictures.
