Duty Due on Gifts Mailed to U.S.

Good Morning Everyone!

Can anyone provide clarification of duty for gifts purchased in Ireland and mailed to the U.S.?

After reviewing the government site on duty fees, etc. I still have questions.

If I mail a gift (not expensive - less than $100, does the receiver pay any money when it is delivered to them?  It appeared to me that there would be a fee, and that me (as the purchaser) cannot prepay the money.  I really don't want the recipient to pay out of pocket for the gift that I send.

Thanks for advice,

Polly

Hi Polly,

If the gift is under $100 and it is the only gift received by the individual that day, my understanding is that it it will be duty free. Customs will make the determination, and if it is determiend to be duty free, it will go back to the postal service and be delivered at no additional charge to you or the recipient. Gifts over $100 are, I believe, subject to duty. I also think you are supposed to mark your package as "unsolicited gift".

Michele may be able to clarify further (or correct me).

Polly,

Oopsy is absolutely correct. You can read more at this government website: http://www.customs.gov/xp/cgov/travel/vacation/kbyg/ Click on Know Before you Go. See pages 11 & 12.
