Shannon to Killybegs

Michele: We have taken your advice and decided not to drive from Shannon to Killybegs in one day after the flight in. My question is where do you suggest we stop that is not so far off the beaten path (to Killybegs) that we could make use of the time and visit The Cliffs of Moher, the Barren and the Aran Islands? Do you have a suggestion for a B&B at that location? Who should we use to get to the Islands? Thanks!

Phillip,

You could drive to Kinvara or Galway for your first night, stopping at the Cliffs and driving through the Burren on the way. That is probably the most driving you should do on the first day. You would need another day for the Aran Islands. Since you are going to be in Killybegs and touring the area you will be seeing loads of beautiful scenery. If you want to go to an island, Arranmore Island is only about 1 1/2 hours drive north and would be a nice day trip for you. The peat bogs and cliffs are stunning there.

Hope this helps you,

Phillip,

I'm glad you are not driving all that way on your frist day! If you want to see the cliffs and burren then Galway would be a good stop. As Susan mentioned, you would need another whole day to see the Aran Islands. In that case you would want to spend two nights in Galway. To get to the Aran Islands you can take a plane (Aer Aran) or a boat. See my "Transport" page for ferries. Also look at my "Lodgings" page for places to stay. The tourist office in Galway can book the Aran Islands for you.
