Michele, rather than repost this question, I thought I would bring this one to the top. I saw in another thread dated 08 that the price was still about 40 euros. Your book talks about agreeing on a price but I'd like to know an estimate for the jaunting car. I want to be sure it's a fair price for the experience if we decide to take a ride around Muckross. Thanks, Deborah
It probably depends on what you see along the way. Some trips could be short and others long. Ballpark is around 25 euro per person. I would want to go everywhere I could including Muckross Estate, Muckross Abbey, Torc Waterfall, Killarney National Park. The jarvey (driver) will wait for you to sightsee at each spot. If you do all that it should take a couple of hours. The more people that go in the jaunting car (like 4) the lower the per person price should be. So if you can meet up with another couple who wants to share it might be of benefit.
You could tell them what you want to see and ask the price. Then ask if they can do any better. Be hesitant and they will notice that and think they are losing a sale. Sometimes you can say "I will think about it" and start walking away. They might call you back. Or you can ask a couple of different jarveys for pricing.
Thanks Michele, how long would you suggest it takes to tour the inside of Muckross House, I don't think I'd want to keep the jaunting car waiting while we did that. Ron and I like to see the interiors of historic homes to better know the living habits from different centuries. Would Muckross house be a good example of the Victorian period in Irelands history? Thanks, Deborah
You can probably see the inside of the house in 30 - 40 minutes, more if you like to examine things in detail.
Did you know that Muckross House was visited by Queen Victoria in 1861? She planted a tree in the garden. I think it is a good representation of the Victorian period in a big mansion. I especially enjoyed examining the old Killarney furniture with inlay and marquetry of scenes of Killarney. Exquisite and unique. Just outside the house is an area where the jaunting cars gather. You can get one there after you see the house and gardens.

Thanks for the information Michele, when it comes to museums I like to stop and read more than Ron does so we may have to agree on a compromise for touring the house. Deborah
There is also Muckross Traditional Farms. If interested you should get a ticket for both together to save money rather than buying two separate tickets for each place.
