Do Yellow Highlighter Pens Leak/Explode on Airplanes?!

Okay, silly but very important question. Do Yellow highlighter pens leak or explode on airplanes? It's a long looooong flight from LAX to Dublin (10 hours) and then we go onto Shannon... I can amuse myself in the air with a highlighter pen and a coupla guidebooks.

And what is the MOST important book to highlight? Of course that would be Michele Erdvig's Best Little Guide to Ireland! (Already multi-colored with highlighters, but you can never have enough highlighting. Okay I'm getting a little weird.

I'm only bringing 2 guidebooks plus maps. What is the second most important guidebook? Rick Steves? I think I should just rip out his Dingle section and leave the rest of the book home. The slim Frommers driving tours? (Not the fat frommers. Won't fit.) One of the slim AAA Ireland guidebooks?

I seem to have nearly every Ireland guidebook in the bookstore on my home shelf. If I only have room for one, Michele's wins, as it has the right combination of personal reviews, and has a balance of must-see types of places with lesser known places. Thanks, Michele. Although your book is fat, it is light-weight. Cool.

Thank you for putting up with me. I will be available in the future to give weird advice to people who think like me. (Are there any of you?!) Do I win the dumbest question prize?

Hello Mellisa5,

I have never had a pen explode on a trip, but I SWEAR BY those high quality Zip Loc type bags. The large  ones with the slider.......

They have a ton of uses. From putting wet clothes in, to organizing stuff packed in my suit case. Who wants to open a suit case and find a opened bottle of shampoo all over your stuff ?

I also carry my maps, brochures and small books in them. The uses are endless. Well worth the few bucks IMO.

Cheers !
Mark D.

Melissa,

I have heard they can leak because of the pressure. But when I travel I always have a pink highlighter (seems to work better on the Irish maps than yellow). I put the highlighter into a zip lock snack size bag and into my purse. If it should leak it will be in the baggie. So far no leaks.

Thanks, Michele and Mark. I put 2 highlighters in my carry-on bag...maybe I should add a zip-loc baggie. If they explode it should make the trip report more interesting...and messy.
