I'm glad to see that you finally found your way into the forum! Is there any reason why you can't pick up your car at 6 am? The car rental desks open early. There is really no place to go sightseeing that you can walk to from the airport. It is out away from most things. There is Shannon Mall but it will not be open at that time and you would need to take a taxi or bus. Look into picking up your car earlier. Are you staying in the area or driving elsewhere on arrival day?
I was thinking about doing just that, email 12 Travel. Also, from the airport we will be driving to Ardnagashel Holiday Cottages - Ballylickey, Cork. And we now understand why they gave us the directions to Ballylickey via Cork and then over to the cottages. It seems it is not that far and they are giving us the "grand tour" since we will have "time to kill" before we are able to register at the cottages. I think the check in time is 4 p.m.
Thanks for your comments. Yes, I am in, took a little doing, but I am now really enjoying all the comments I have looked into.

I would not drive through Cork on your first day in Ireland. It is a large, confusing city with lots of traffic. Actually Ballylickey is closer to Killarney than to Cork City. Instead, get your car early and drive to Killarney. By the time you arrive the town will be waking up. There is plenty to do there to keep you awake till afternoon. You can always park and take a little snooze in the car. You never know how jet-lag will affect you.
Yes I do remember jet lag, always ready to KILL if anyone looked at me.......We checked our map of Ireland, very detailed one from 12 Travel and found what seems a much easier to get to our first lodging.
Shannon, Limerick to N20, Adare N21, Newcastle West, Castleisland, to N23, then N22 Ballyvourney, Macroom, R584 to Ballylickey.
Or down N20to Mallow, to N72 Dernagree to N22 and so on....
What do you think?

As they say in Ireland "The road you're on will get you there"...eventually! Some of those roads are very small and go through the mountains. That means going slower and taking longer. Once you reach Castleisland see how your driving is going. If you are extremely tired, try to take the main roads instead.
