hello from ireland in JULY!

hello from ireland! here i am in westport.  ireland is more beautiful than the photos.  enjoying good weather.  most useless item in my luggage was long sleeved sweaters which you wear instead of a blouse...more useful clothes were t-shirts with sweatshirts or light jackets worn over them. so layering clothes has worked best.

don't have much time, am using sadie's computer at the boulevard guesthouse in wesport, very hospitable people.  bye!  off to northern ireland tomorrow.

lots of american tourists in dingle and county clare.  hardly any american tourists in westport if you are looking to get a bit more off the beaten path.  irish tourists, locals, and european tourists mostly here in westport, county mayo.

great cup of tea over here.  first i hated guiness.  then i tried murphys and smithwicks.  then i couldn't go back to the weaker tasting pale beers...have developed a taste for guiness and murphys which i have decided taste a lot like coffee.  toucan is a beer which apparently is made from the old original guiness recipe.  they have it at matt malloys pub in westport but many pubs don't have it on tap.

have worn my white nike walking shoes everywhere.  since our weather was mostly sunny they have stayed fairly clean.  but there is sheep poo everywhere and i look at the ground a lot.

got stuck in a cow-jam.  instead of a traffic jam.

i love it here.  i am moving here and taking san diego weather to keep here with me.

Melissa,

Thanks for your greetings from Ireland.  So nice of you to take the time to post. I hear the weather is incredible over there right now. A nice heat wave Irish style. I have been keeping an eye on the weather and satellite views. Looks to be in the 50s at night.

I'm glad you are enjoying your trip and the tourists have finally thinned out. It sounds like you are developing an addiction to the dark stuff. You do know that it only tastes like that in Ireland? You may have to go back again sooner than you think.

I hope the weather holds for the Antrim coast. Any rainbows yet?

Michele

Hi everybody! We just got back and haven't unpacked yet. Major jet lag. Wonderful trip and I miss Ireland. Too much cityscape and concrete here in San Diego...miss all those rolling hills and farmlands and wild seascapes in Ireland.

I will post a nice organized trip report but just had to jump on here to say hi. Thanks for everybody's help and encouragement!

We also had some trip stress...everybody does. You know how you all say to add about 30% more time onto those AA roadwatch driving time estimates? Well, I think we just about doubled all of those times!!!

I'm so tired I'm dizzy and didcombobulated...but content.

Melissa,

Let me be the first to say welcome home!  I recall from returning from our Paris/Italy trip 2 years ago how exhausting yet relieving it was to arrive at home...exhilerating yet something of a let-down.  Our Ireland trip is in less than 4 weeks now.  I can't wait to hear all about your travels!

caseyhen, thanks for the welcome home. After a good night's sleep I hope what I have written here tonight will make a tad of sense. How I miss all that wide-open space Ireland has so much of...places where you can turn your head in either direction and see hardly a sign of the ugly side of civilization...instead, you see rolling hills, farmlands, wild seascapes, gentle fat sheep, and a crumbling ruin dotted somewhere on the hillside, haunted with history...Ahhhh, Ireland...

Michele, I sure do miss Ireland already. The musical lilt of the Irish accents are still singing in me ears. When they begin to fade, it will be time to start planning the next trip to Ireland...
