We have already declined the CDW with Hertz for our upcoming trip.  I don't have to worry about any little dent or scratch, so is there any other optional insurance we should consider?

Thank you.

Hi Caroline,

Sorry that I have no suggestions for you on this issue as I will be traveling to Ireland in September for my very first time. However - when you say that you are decling CDW insurance does that mean that you actually have CDW coverage with a credit card? As you may or may not know - this 'coverage' has been a great source of debate on this and other message boards for quite some time now as apparently credit cards have stopped providing coverage in Ireland. Some people were told earlier in the summer that they would be covered and later discovered that there would be no coverage.  Some have been told outright that they will not be covered and others have been told to wait until after September 1st. Apparently this is when Master Card changes will take effect. Would like to hear about your coverage. Thanks.  Jim

Yes, I'll be declining the agencies CDW coverage because we have it through out credit card.  I've called the credit card company numerous times.  They insist I'll be covered for my August trip, and if the rental agency gives me any problems then I have a number for them to call to verify our coverage.  I'd be pleased to purchase additional insurance if it means we will be covered for all minor dings and such.  I'm really not exactly sure what the CDW covers.

Anybody???

Caroline,

I assume you have a gold or platinum MasterCard that will cover you with their MasterRental insurance? Most coverage is for 15 days. Some business cards cover for 31 days. You must read the fine print. Not everything is covered such as tires and windshields. Even if you purchase extra CDW from Hertz those things are probably not covered. With the MasterRental insurance you have zero deductable. If you purchase CDW from Hertz you will have a deductable. I always opt for using MasterCard's coverage as it makes sense for me.

You can read more on my Car Rental page. Unless you need insurance to cover medical insurance in case of an accident you should be okay doing what you have done. But only you know exactly what you need. Read the fine print on your MasterRental agreement. It will give you all the details.

Michele

P.S. I believe you have also purchased trip insurance. You might want to look at that policy. Sometimes they also cover car rentals.
