I had brown bread ice cream served for desert at the Wyatt Hotel in Westport.....It was sort of like vanilla ice cream with a bread pudding chunks... It was GREAT ! I come from the state of Ben and Jerry's, and the ice cream I had in Ireland was as good, if not better ! Sorry I don't know the brand.
you don't need to look for a specific brand, whenever someone offers "homemade ice cream" just go ahead and order it! Its almost always delicious.
One hidden sort of place where we found great ice cream...there is a small gift shop in Killarney by the parking area for Torc Waterfall. Its just a little shop, with postcards, cheezy souvenirs, and in the back a freezer with homemade ice cream. Its really, really good. I had Baileys, and mom had honey flavored.
The other place we had particularly memorable ice cream was at McGann's pub in Doolin. They had toffee ice cream that was to die for.
Most restaurants in Ireland will have a selection of ice cream on their dessert menu. Many times it is home made and wonderful. At convenience stores, petrol stations, etc. you can get soft ice cream in a cone. It is usually vanilla, however you can get a "flake" which is a big chunk of chocolate inserted into the ice cream. There is an ice cream shop in Killarney (I think it is called Maude's but don't hold me to that name please). It is on the main street. There is one inside the little walk-through mall also.
In the freezers at newsagents shops try a Magnum bar. Kind of like a Dove bar.
Don't worry, you will find plenty of ice cream in Ireland.
Is ice cream available year round in Ireland or only in the summer? I know around here, many of our ice cream shops close for the season in September or October.
I haven't been to Ireland in the dead of winter (Dec, Jan, Feb) but ice cream has always been available at all the other times I have been there. I would assume you can also get it in the winter.
