I'm ready to return to Ireland after 3 years away and I'm a bit rusty in the travel department. In the last 2 weeks the flights I was interested from Michigan to Ireland have increased in price nearly $100! I am not planning to go until May, but was hoping not to have to buy my (2) tickets until September. Is there any chance that additional flights will be added or (heaven forbid) that ticket prices may go down, or should I be mortgaging the farm to buy early? What is your experience?
There are usually plenty of "winter sales" coming up. Since you are not going till next year you may want to wait. I suggest you sign up for newsletters from the airlines that you are interested in traveling on. They will send you alerts for sales and then you can jump on the good fares.
Since i have unwillingly taken on the job as family and friends travel coordinator during our 2 year stint here in ireland, i have spent much more time than i care to admit monitoring airfare.
if it were me, i would monitor a site like www.sidestep.com on tuesday or wednesday and saturdays. they check all the major airlines and can direct you with a link to each airline and that day's best published price.
i suggested those specific days because i have read that the airlines release their seat sales on tuesday and saturdays.
currently, the best flights and airfares i have found are in the 700 range on delta thru atlanta or us airways thru philadelphia. if you go in winter, the price drops dramatically to 400 (that would be february).
Wow! Never heard of side step. Thanks. I'm going to forge ahead with yet another airline question... I need to get a connecting flight from an area airport to (probably) Chicago. Do I look for the whole shebang or should I be looking for tickets just from Chicago to Ireland (and back of course) and then tickets from central Michigan to Chicago. If I purchased the tickets seperately would I have trouble with luggage being transferred (I'm thinking perhaps I would)? These may seem like pretty stupid questions, but I figure I can at least ask...
I often tell everyone here that there are no stupid questions. If you need to know something, then it is important. Feel free to ask whatever you want.
I think you should look at airfares both ways and see what would be cheaper. Keep in mind that you need plenty of connection time. Better to have more than you need, rather than less. If you purchase separate tickets for the different segments of your trip there is no problem transfering luggage from one flight to another or even between various airlines. However, you must tell the airline you are first checking in with about your ongoing flights and final destination. They will need to see your ticketing for this. If you fail to inform them there is no way they could know.
