Hello! Just got back from a weekend bluegrass festival and I’m checking out all your suggestions.
Glad to see others like Oughterard. I’ve never been there but I’ve read it’s an interesting little place. I’m hoping it will be an adequate base perhaps for at least three days. We don’t need to spend any great time at The Cliff’s of Moher, or the Burren so I think hitting those places on the way to Oughterard will work okay. My experience is that it can be difficult checking in to a B&B early so we may as well head north. Any B&B recommendations for Oughterard (and any place else we’re staying) will be appreciated.
I’m thinking now that perhaps we should stay in Oughterard 3 days. Part of my reasoning for heading across to Kilkenny was quite simply that I’d never seen the part of the country in which we’d be traversing. I’d quite like to see The Rock of Cashel (when the gates aren’t locked – although it is very lovely at night) and Cahir Castle (if we forego Kilkenny Castle). So maybe instead of cutting across via Roscommon to Kilkenny we just drop down through Limerick and spend a couple days near Tipperary before heading to Kenmare. Am I getting closer?
I fully understand what Melissa is saying about getting swept up and lost in the country and not worrying about what you don’t get to see. My “problem” is that I drive great distances for my job and although I know from experience that driving times are much slower in Ireland, driving is not at all unenjoyable or taxing to me. It’s the journey, not the destination.
(I’m also considering 2 days in Kenmare and 2 days on the Dingle peninsula. I’m just afraid driving from Dingle to Shannon would be a long trip on the last morning.)
Days 1,2 and 3: Arrive in Shannon. Stay in Oughterard. Must see: Cliffs of Moher, The Burren (hopefully blossomed). Drive through Galway, not likely to stop. Explore the Connemara region. Kylemore Abbey, Roundstone, Skyline drive in Clifden. More to the coast than inland but maybe go to Cong.
Day 4 and 5: Head to Tipperary (other basing suggestions welcome). Visit the
Rock of Cashel, Cahir Castle and the general area. Off-the-beaten-path
suggestions welcome.
Day 6, 7, and 8: To Kenmare via Blarney (might skip Blarney). See what we can
of Beara Peninsula, and/or Ring of Kerry, take in Killarney if it’s rainy.
Day 9: Leave Kenmare and do the Dingle Peninsula. Stay last night at
Ballybunion (Bill has visited the Marconi radio site in CA and I think
would appreciate this, plus we’re a little closer to the airport).
Day 10: Head to airport – maybe cruise through Adare on the way. Flight likely
I would be really suprised if you were able to just "drive through" Galway. We found we could easily stay there a couple of days. Sooooo much to see and do. The shopping and pub life is fantastic. Personally, I think you are short changing yourself . Since you are in the area, I would atleast have lunch/dinner and spend a little time walking around downtown
I am sure you will receive lots of other opinions! There are lots of itineary experts out there. I'm sure they would be happy to guide you on your way.
The itinerary is doable. It would be nice if you could fit in an overnight stay in Dingle. It really is a lovely area. Perhaps steal one day from Tipperary. You might want to stay in Cashel or Cahir since there is not much going on in Tipperary town.
My personal preference would be to stay closer to the airport on your last night. You should be at the airport 2 1/2 to 3 hours ahead of time. You may get hung up in Limerick traffic if you drive from Ballybunion. Really no time to "cruise through Adare". You could always drive through Ballybunion on your way to Bunratty, which is a good place to stay on your last night (10 minutes to the airport).
Oh man, I am going to drive myself nuts! I appreciate the feedback. Mark - I love Vermont. You lucky fellow you - you actually live in a vacation spot. I have a sister in Barre. I figured if we stayed 3 nights in Oughterard we could return to Galway if we decide to do towns. Part of the challenge is that Bill wants to stay out of "cities (i.e. the larger dots on the map)" but in my memory, many cities in Ireland are more like towns here - Not all that big.
I appreciate the suggestion of a couple days at Cahir or Cashel Michelle. I didn't see that much to do near Tipperary and I really do love the Dingle peninsula. Perhaps I should have just routed us into Shannon and out of Dublin but I was trying to keep everything simple.
And thanks for the lodging page suggestion. For some reason the other day when I was searching through the site I found only hotel suggestions. Must have wandered into the wrong spot. I'm a good wanderer if nothing else.
I'll chew on these for a while and see how it settles in my brain. Thanks.
luckygreen, good luck with the planning and by the way Michele's advice is always terrific and based on a lotta experience!
Our problem with our 2 longest drives is that the journey WASN'T fun and we didn't get to experience Ireland, because the journey consisted of navigating confusing circles and not having any time to enjoy the journey. We had to drive right through anyplace interesting without having time to stop there. One problem was due to the enjoyable late breakfasts we usually got a late start on our driving days...we would check out, load up the car, and not leave until 10:30 or 11:00 am...not the best plan if you have a long journey. You also don't want to be searching for your next b&b in the dark which we did indeed end up doing once!!!
The only drives we enjoyed in Ireland were the ones with day-trips with lots of stops and time for hikes.
If I had to plan our trip over, I would NOT have taken the drives which AA roadwatch lists as 5 1/2 hours in one day, because those were the ones we didn't enjoy and which caused us family mutiny in the car and where all we did was pass by cool places like Connemara and say, oh well, too bad, can't stop and see that! Next time, our longest drive on AA roadwatch web-site will be 4 hours in one day!!!
Anyway everybody is different. That's what didn't work for us! Have a great trip.
You may have been looking at my "Castle Hotels" page. Try this one: http://www.irelandyes.com/lodgings.html There are a few hotels on it but mostly B&Bs and guesthouses.
Oughterard is a nice town and it is not too far if you decide to spend a day in Galway. Are you looking for a B&B right near town or can it be a couple of miles away?
I'd really like to find a B&B within walking distance of town but that may be expecting too much. If there's one a short hop, skip, and jump away I'd consider it as well.
