Flights to Aran Islands

My mom, husband & I are very interested ( a Must !) in going to the Aran Islands on 9/4.
Does anyone have any experience with flying there?
Cost, any names of air line etc would be helpful. Just thinking that this would be better than taking the boat, since we arrive early that morning in Ireland.
Thanks to all for the great info !
Maureen

Maureen,

Forum member Bill (wojazz) has flown to the Aran Islands and highly recommends it. The airline is Aer Arann: http://www.aerarannislands.ie/ The cost is not much more than taking the ferry.

Hello,

Husband and I flew to Inis Mor a couple years ago.  The only way to go!  We arrived before the ferries and had Dun Aengus all to ourselves.  The island was socked in when we arrived at the airport around 1600, so they bused us to the ferry for our return, and then bused us back to Inverin ( the airport on the mainland)from the pier.

Hope this is of some help.

Helen,

Thanks for your input. I'm sure it will be of value for those wondering about alternates to the ferry to the Aran Islands.

We flew to the Aran Islands in 2000, its the only way I would go. It was great, quick & friendly. I'm not great on boats & everyone said the boat ride can be long & rocky!

I agree with the above. The drive along the coast to the airport is nice too.

Thanks a million for the valuable input.
Is it necessary to pre-book a flight?
I see that the flights leave quite frequently all day, but was not certain of how full they get.
Also, I didn't want to be nervous about booking ahead, in case our flight is delayed etc.
(Less than 3 weeks to go for our trip !)

Maureen,

Since I have not taken the flight before, I suggest you contact the airline to see what advice they have to offer. They will be able to tell you if the flights are often full and when you should book.

It's probably best to pre-book. They say they will try to find room for everyone but it would be nice to secure a seat. The planes hold 9 people.
