Only two weeks to go till our dream trip to Ireland. We've reserved our B&Bs in Lisdoonvarna, Westport, Galway, Dingle, Kenmare, Kinsale, and Ennis...but still have our 3 nights in County Sligo to take care of.
We're hoping to spend a day with DH's aunt, uncle, and cousins in Grange (Moneygold, actually), and would also like to visit Donegal for a day. I'd like to dash down to Drumshanbo in Leitrim (I know, no dashing on Irish roads...) to visit my family's roots as well. At any rate...we've received a reply from Carbury House, just outside of Sligo Town, but are also interested in Atlantic Haven in Moneygold. Not only is that where the relatives are, but the email contact looks to be related to the cousins! Another draw is that it's the only place in walking distance of a pub or restaurant...though we know that Moneygold is tiny, we've made a huge effort to stay in walking distance of someplace to go in the evening, since I'm the driver and don't relish the thought of driving after dark, and I'd like to enjoy the pubs! However, after 2 emails we haven't had a response. We could book through an online booking form, but I wanted to ask first whether anyone has stayed there. Such experience on these forums!
Our third possibility is Mountain View B&B in Drumcliffe, though we haven't had a response to our email to them either.
Caseyhen, how exciting, we loved Westport and Dingle! Good idea to try to stay walking distance to town if you like pubs...it was much more relaxing that way. But make sure walking distance is also safe...you want a sidewalk or enough shoulder on the road to walk...We saw pedestrians sometimes walking in completely unsafe spots, on narrow roads with cars whipping by, no shoulder, and sometimes even on a curve! That's a very dangerous place to walk!
As to contacting b&bs, sometimes they are on vacation we found or on an out-of-town visit! Try to get their phone numbers if it's a small family-run place...the only trouble with phone calls is, it can get expensive if they start chatting in that friendly Irish way. Perhaps if you gave your DH's relatives the phone numbers of the places you are trying to contact, they could try to call by phone, and maybe get the b&b hosts to e-mail you?
Also, I have had trouble with hotels and b&bs in Europe not being able to reach my old e-mail account, which was on roadrunner and was through Outlook Express. I now have them always contact me through a yahoo e-mail account and they never have any trouble. Try a different e-mail account.
Sometimes the server in Ireland can be down for a week also...that happened once to us...and that is why you can't reach them.
Good luck! Gotta love Ireland! Where are you staying in Westport and Dingle? Westport is great, Matt Malloys Pub has great traditional music, it's different every night (when we were there in July), and we loved the fun uncrowded shopping. Such a charming town, just the right size. If you are tired of Irish food by then and tired of potatoes have some good Italian at Torrino's. (in my trip report on trip report page.)
I agree with Melissa about phoning the B&Bs that you cannot contact by email. It is sometimes a much more efficient way to make reservations in Ireland. If I were staying in Sligo I would stay at Iorras on Rosses Point Road. No website but you can contact Ita Connolly at connollyiorras@eircom.net It is a small cozy B&B with comfy rooms and wonderful home baking and breakfast. Carbury House is nice but I have no knowledge of the others.
