I'm obviously not Michele but I can tell you that I planned my first vacation to Ireland for October specifically because it was less expensive (at least the accommodations were cheaper than the summer months) *and* most of the sites we wanted to visit were still open. (A number of attractions close over some of the winter months.)
Welcome to the forum. As Willie has said prices go down starting in October. However, the cheapest time to travel to Ireland is in the winter (except for the December/Jan holidays). Aer Lingus usually has some low airfares for travel Nov-March. You may want to sign up for their newsletter and be alerted to sales.
Not everything is open in winter so you will need to plan your trip more carefully.
Thank you, and also Willie for the info. If one was to go in the October-March timeframe is there any special atractions that you might recommend for that time period? How about the weather that time of year?
There are so many attractions in Ireland it is hard to know where to begin. It really does depend on what your interests are. Go to this page for my Top 10 List: http://www.irelandyes.com/sightseeing.html You should be reading up on Ireland to decide what appeals to you. Go to your local library or bookstore and browse.
Ireland's weather is temperate and they rarely get snow. However, Oct to March covers many months and October would be very different from January. Go to my weather page and click on the boxes around the map for the history of weather in that area.
My husband and I picked October because it was cheaper and we love drizzly cold weather. We got a really good deal through 12Travel.com. For the two of us, a car rental, a cottage in Cork-one week, and a cottage in Galway-one week, & air fare, we pay for our meals and thought it would be good to have a "base" and plan our vacation stops in each area from there. The whole trip, with the inflated air plane fuel jump came to $ 3,150.36 for two. I ordered a very nice book map from ebay that I am able to plan, very easily, our trip to different events, etc. Michelle's book is fantastic and gives you a LOT of information for everything you will need. I also got Rick Steves book, which was good. Now all my husband and I have to do is sit down and eliminate the places we won't be able to get to, since I have researched so much and way too many things listed to see.
Good luck and have a lot of fun....
