Those Travel Advisories

It's been a week since security measures have increased, but I thought I'd pass along some details from Liam (www.irishfireside.com) who was traveling the day the alerts were issued.

Procedures and signage have probably changed in the last week, but on the day he was traveling, no liquids, including alcohol purchased in duty free, were permitted on the plane. He said there was a sign in duty free that stated liquids might not be allowed on the plane, but it was unclear (I understand that the next day the signage was much more explicit, as was the information in the news and on websites). There were some pretty sad travelers who had to watch their newly purchased booze go in a box that "might" arrive in Chicago.

The same was true for perfume, make-up...anything liquid or liquid-like.

Now that I've posted on the message board, I'm going to tell you...Don't rely on message boards for getting this type of information. Call your airlines help line, they will have the most current information available. And even if someone tells you, "Oh, we traveled yesterday...you don't really have to follow the rules," don't bother...there's a good chance you'll be the one holding up the line for the rest of us

yesiree, I notice on the www.fodors.com web-site, NOT on the travel forum, but on the home page, there is a message for updated airline security regulations for the U.K. travel which you can click on. When I went to the site it was detailing the basic news story and also detailing the latest news of exactly what you could or could not take on U.K. flights. Of course they could change that any time but I learned some quite annoying but I suppose necessary things like:
--parents bringing baby formula were required to taste it (yes that was on the list!)
--women were allowed to bring enough tampons for the flight (gee thanks!)
--no purses were allowed and everything had to be in see-through zip-loc bags...

Anyway I agree with you yesiree, don't blame me if that news has already been changed, I'm just reporting what was apparently current news as of the time I read it on www.fodors.com!

I am sure glad I wasn't one of the people affected by the new security regulations for the U.K. travel. Of course everyone realizes Northern Ireland is part of the U.K. (I admit, being geographically challenged, I actually learned that fact while planning my first trip!)

Corey,

Excellent advice. I suggest that those traveling contact their airline for more info. Keep in mind that this is a constantly changing situation. It also depends on where you are flying. What is banned today may be allowed tomorrow. So check right before your flight also.

Check the TSA website: http://www.tsa.gov/

Don't depend on what you hear through the grapevine. Confirm all the details yourself with a reliable source.
