We are planning a trip to Ireland for our honeymoon , since I’ve never been out of the country and Steve (my fiancé) has only been out of the country with the Army (4 yrs in Germany) i don't really know where to begin. I know we want to go some time between March and May next year. We'll be spending 4 or 5 days in Ireland then moving over to Scotland. This was a bit of a compromise as he wanted to see Scotland and I want to see Ireland. I think the 4 or 5 days in each place will be just a tease but at least I’ll get off the east coast!
I'm not sure what I want to see in Ireland yet... everything would be nice but i really don't have that kind of vacation time off work... or the funds for that matter! I would like to center around seeing castles and cliffs, I would also like to do some local shopping. Is there anything that you would recommend that we just not miss on our first time there??? I just overwhelmed by all of the information that is out there... i can't decide what i want to see
You are right that spending only 5 days in each place will be just a tiny taste of each country. Have you thought of just seeing one country instead? If you must see both you will probably want to stick to the west of Ireland for cliffs and castles. Fly in and out of Shannon if possible.
I suggest you go to your library and/or bookstore for books on Ireland. Read up, make a list of what you must see in order of importance. If you live in the US or Canada call Tourism Ireland today for a free vacation kit: 1-800-223-6470. Otherwise, go to their website and contact them there: www.tourismireland.com
Click on the IrelandYes Index and click on "Getting Started" from the drop down box. Also take a look at my "Sightseeing" page. They will help too. Once you have an idea of what you want to see and do, we will all be waiting here to help.
zelenka9, happy honeymoon! Is there any chance you two can compromise on this plan: Ireland for honeymoon and Scotland for first anniversary trip? Or the other way around? Maybe even flip a coin?!
Since it is your first international trip, and since the whole wedding planning bit is rather tiring although exciting, I suggest you resist the urge to go everywhere...settle on a few fantastic spots, and spend at least 2 or 3 nights in each spot...stay in a romantic b&b or hotel...take day-trips from there. Anyway that's my advice!
Michele's book is great for Ireland. We took our first trip to Ireland in July 2006 and found Michele's advice very reliable.
I have also been to various other countries and found that, for us, basically, the faster we travel the less we see...Have you ever tried to watch a movie in fast-forward?!
