First off I want to say you all give great advice that us first time travelers greatly appreciate. So as our trip is now only 21 days away, we have questions. Can you get from Killmare to Dingle in a reasonable amount of time? We have chosen to drive Dingle vs the Ring of Kerry. We are figuring that driving the Dingle is a whole day.
We will then likely head towrds Cork, Cobh, and Kinsale. From there we would like to head to Hook Head Lighthouse.
After Hook Head, it is north bound to Northern Ireland to Tyrone Crystal and the area around Omagh, Ardstraw, and if possible a quick stop in Derry. Then we hope to catch Belleek and Enniskillen.
From there we want to head across to the Kylemore Abbey amd back towrds County Clare.
We fly in and out of Shannon.
We know we will not see everything. We like off the beaten path places and of course catching a lighthouse or two!
We for sure want to get to Northern Ireland as that is where my family is from and I want to go to the town where my relatives were married.
We do not want to plan every moment or even every day. We want to see what we see and enjoy Ireland! We plan to stay in B&B's and so are also open to suggestions of places to stay where we can do day trips here and there. We realize we will have some single nights as we will be headed north.
How much time do you have in Ireland? Winging it in September is fine but weekends in popular areas can be more difficult. I suggest you start looking a bit earlier on Fri & Saturdays. If you don't have my book yet there is still time to get it. It will be a big help for deciding on where to stay, what to see, where to eat, etc. Otherwise you can go to my Lodgings page and print out some of the suggestions there. The Town & Country Book is available free from Tourism Ireland or you can buy it when you arrive in Ireland at the tourist office in Shannon Airport.
Are you talking about doing Dingle as a day trip from Kenmare? That is quite a long day. Perhaps you can plan your itinerary for an overnight stay in Dingle. It really is a lovely place that you don't want to rush through.
You are covering quite a bit of territory. I hope you have the time to do it.
Yes, Michele, we have your book and it has been very helpful! We will be in Irleand for 2weeks. Our first two nights we are staying at Hillcrest B&B in Killrush, Co.Clare-right near the Tarbert car ferry. Is it possible to go back and forth from Dingle and Hillcrest or should we plan just to see Co. Clare while we are at Hillcrest and then head to Dingle? Any other suggestions? Thanks again! Heidi
In July, I travelled from Dingle to Kilrush to stay at Hillcrest View B&B. I would think it would be way to much to do as a day trip to go back and forth between the two. We did enjoy checking out Co. Clare from Hillcrest though.
Thanks for clarifying your plans. I think that you should just concentrate on Co. Clare while in Kilrush. There is plenty to do there. Had you thought of taking the ferry from Killimer to Tarbert and overnighting in Dingle after that? Then you could proceed east and north. That will cut out backtracking.
Some places that are good bases:
Killarney/Kenmare
Kilkenny
Dublin
Belfast (or nearby)
Ballycastle/Bushmills
Letterkenny/Donegal
Westport
Galway
I'm sure you won't be staying in all those places but it will give you some options to choose from. Don't forget to look at my "Quick Picks" at the end of each chapter in my book. That will give you more B&Bs to choose from.
