Tidy Towns announced

This year there were four categories: Tidiest Village, Tidiest Small Town,
Tidiest Large Urban Centre (a new category) and overall national Tidy Town.

The winners were announced today, and are as follows --

Ireland's Tidiest Village - Birdhill, County Tipperary (Tipperary
North)...Birdhill is on the N7 just north of Limerick on the Limerick to
Dublin road.

Ireland's Tidiest Small Town - Aughrim, County Wicklow...Aughrim is just
west of Arklow on the R747 road going toward Glendalough.

Ireland's Tidiest Urban Centre - Ennis, County Clare...Ennis is at the
heart of County Clare with the N18 going through the middle of town between
Galway and Limerick.

And the overall national Tidiest Town in Ireland is......Westport, County
Mayo! For more information, you can watch a news clip at
http://www.rte.ie/news/2006/0904/tidytowns.html or tune into the Tidy Towns
website at http://www.tidytowns.ie

Nice to see Westport get the overall award. My favorite town in Ireland.

Cheers!

Mark,

Great news about Westport! This is a town that is certainly deserving. We were there this summer over the 12th July and the town was packed with tourists from the US and Northern Ireland. Plus the N59 running through town had traffic backed up forever it seemed. Even with all the crowds the streets and sidewalks were clean and neat and there were flowers and flowerboxes all around. We had a wonderful 3 days - people watching in the Octagon, sitting on a bench by the canal, Hoban's, The Lemon Peel, Torrinos, Sol Rio, the Porterhouse where we had great fun with Kevin and Oclan (Matt Malloy's was just too crowded for us, but we did have a couple of pints there early one evening). Yikes, I cannot wait to go back!

Mark,

Thanks so much for reporting on the Tidy Towns contest. It is always fun to see which places are chosen. Westport is a favorite of mine too.

Ah, another fan of Kevin and Oclan. Yes, Matt Molloy's can be packed and the craic is terrific at the Porterhouse. OK, I want to go too.

Bill,

I sense Ireland's siren song drawing you back again. So when is the next trip?
