first visit, planning advice, please

Hi again,

Mid October, (13-14) I travel from Los Angeles to Ireland and leave October 22.  My sketchy plan is to go to the Limerick poetry festival and the Tipperary Writers Festival to be held in the Aillwee Cave  in Ballyvaughan County Clare Ireland.

My questions:  should I fly to Shannon and rent a car?

should I fly to Dubin and drive to my main area of interest for the pleasure of the drive?  I wonder what timing is involved with that and if I would be too pressed in terms of driving back. Or, perhaps I can rent a car one way and fly from Shannon to Dublin.  Perhaps that's too much complexity for a short visit.

Any recommendations on economical places to stay in the area and sites/events not to miss?

I also wonder about train travel within Ireland.  Does anyone have any thoughts or recommendations on one or two day train excursions from the areas I will be visiting?

Thank you, all.  I am thrilled about this trip and so happy to have found this site!

Best regards,

Diana

Diana,

Welcome to the forum! From what you have told me I think that flying into and out of Shannon Airport will make most efficient use of your short time in Ireland. Plan on renting a car because public transportation will require even more time to get around and you will be bound by schedules, etc. Skip Dublin this time.

In Ballyvaughan I like Drumcreehy House: http://www.drumcreehyhouse.com/ and Cappabhaile: http://www.cappabhaile.com/ If you are spending a few nights there inquire about lower rates than posted on the websites. If you need more economical you might have to look into hostels.

Dear Michele,

Thank you!  I made my plane reservations today - LAX to Shannon and back without trying to spend time in Dublin.  That feels right for this trip.

The guest houses you suggested look wonderful on their web sites.  How far in advance do you think I need to book for October?

Also, what are your opinions about personal safety when traveling alone in this part of Ireland?

Best regards,

Diana

Diana,

Congratulations on making your airfare reservations. That means you are one step closer to Ireland. October is generally slow in Ireland. You may be able to "wing it" without reservations. However, if you want the comfort of knowing you will have a certain place to stay on a certain day, I suggest you make your reservations after you have a firm itinerary.

You probably know where you will stay on your first and last day in Ireland so those you can book. For the first day (and after the long flight from LAX) you will not want to do much driving.

The areas you will be in are much safer than most places in the USA. Use common sense and you will be just fine. It is nice staying at the smaller B&Bs and guesthouses because you are not just another anonymous guest (like at a hotel). The Irish are very friendly and welcoming.
