Doolin for Family?

Hi there!

I'm currently trying to plan a trip for my whole family to Ireland.  Some of my research has brought me to this lovely forum, which has already answered many of my questions.  But here are a few more:

I am interested in vacationing in Clare, and the town Doolin keeps showing up in my research.  I intend to rent one or two self catering cottages, but I worry about all my guests being comfortable in whatever location I choose.  The age range of my family spans from 22 years to 64 years (and not all of them would enjoy a pint at a local pub)... and I read somewhere that Doolin is a younger town, perhaps not appropriate for the older family members.  Is this the case?

Since we are going the self catering route, we do plan to have rental cars.  Is Doolin a good base for exploring all of Clare's sights?  Are there nearby places to buy groceries, should we choose to make our own meals?  Are there better coastal towns to base our vacation out of?

I am simply looking for any information and recommendations any of you may have for my predicament.  I would appreciate any and all insight.  Thank you so much!!!!

Sharon Lynn.

Sharon Lynn,

Doolin can hardly be classified as a "town". It is extremely tiny with 3 pubs and a couple of restaurants and shops. There are also several hostels there, which do attract the back-packing and camping crowd.

If it is Clare you are interested in and the coast in particular, you may want to consider larger places like Lahinch or Kilkee, that provide more amenities.

Co. Kerry would also make a very good base. What time of year are you going? How long will you be in Ireland? That would make a difference as to what you might choose.

Dear Michelle,

Thanks so much for the info.  My family and I are planning to go next August- my fiance and I want to get married over in Ireland (just a blessing by a priest- we'll do the legalities in the States) and want to turn our wedding into a big family trip where everyone can get to know each other.

I understand it gets pretty touristy in August.  We're looking for a place that's somewhat rural, but within walking distance of a town with activities.  I'm trying to stay away from Kerry, as I know that's where most of the tourists go that time of year.

We're planning to stay for about six days- the final day would be our "blessing ceremony" so no sightseeing then.  I really want to get to the Cliffs of Moher, the Aran Islands, and areas of the Burren, but I also want time to relax and enjoy the family vacation.

Again, I must thank you for your advice.  This forum is such a valuable resource; I look forward to chatting more!

Many thanks, Sharon Lynn

What kinds of town activities are you looking for?  Most of the towns (or villages) are quite small, although very charming.

Sharon Lynn,

Lahinch would probably be the best coastal town to be near. If you don't mind being more inland Ennis is a larger town than those you will find on the coast. It is a hub of traditional Irish music and has lots of restaurants, shopping, etc. It is not a "charming" town but a real working Irish town.

Maybe "charming" isn't a very good term - it sounds a little precious - but I think Ennis is a great town!  It's somewhat bustling,  has some good pubs, and there is often music available.  Lahinch seems to me to be a rather typical beach town, it attracts quite a few Irish holidaymakers.

Sharon Lynn,

Andi is right Ennis is an interesting bustling market town. Another thought is Ballyvaughan. The town itself is very small but it is not that far from Galway. You could certainly go into Galway for shopping, sightseeing, etc. It is near Kinvara where they have banquets at Dunguaire Castle.
