Dublin in December

Michele,

My grandfather and I are going to Dublin in December from the 16th to the 23rd. We have already booked our flights and hotel. My question is this: We arrive in Dublin Saturday morning at 8:45. We have not rented a car. What would be the best way to get to our hotel on Amiens Street? Another question: How much money should we take with us? We are by no means rich, but we don't want to feel cheated either. We receive continental breakfast at our hotel, and one day we are taking a train tour to Cork and Cobh and will need to purchase food there too. Our train that morning leaves from Heuston Station. How should we get there? Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much!

Hi Jon

Not sure how far up from the Custom House your hotel is at on Amiens St..  The airport city bus #7xx (not sure rest) stops at the Customs House.  That’s the cheap way unless you take a taxi.  Amiens st begins in the Customs House area.  Let’s find out where exactly the hotel is.

Money matters……One easy way, although others may have their own method.  If you can stuff your checking account with money, you can attach a Bank debit card to the checking account.  Then it is easy to go to the ATM in Ireland and get cash from your checking account.

Taking the train….can’t help on that but one of our Princess’s Anita, on Michele’s royal forum might be able to give more info, unless Michele’s book would have that info.

Not certain if any of this helps, so….

I’ll stop for now,

-gary

Jon,

When you arrive in Dublin Airport there is a special transportation information desk and they will be able to tell you the very best way to get to your accommodations. A bus will save money but a taxi will be more convenient.

You are correct in not renting a car in Dublin. Getting around by public transportation will be best. You can pick up a bus schedule at the desk I mentioned at the airport. You can also look at schedules online by going to my "Transport" page and clicking through to the bus site.

I assume you will be using credit cards for most things including your accommodation in Ireland. As Gary says you can use a bank ATM at Irish banks with no charge. Contact your own bank to see what their charge is.

Most things can be charged. So you will need cash for incidentals and admissions. However, if you can access your checking account with your ATM card you should be set. As a back up you could always take a couple of hundred dollars in traveler's checks for an emergency.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Michele
