Late August Crowds

My wife and I are considering a 10 trip in 2007 in and out of Shannon beginning Aug 23. Will probably start in County Clifden (the Delphi Lodge in Leenane looks amazing), Dingle and Kenmare. Plan to do the usual things which looks like driving/sightseeing, maybe some hiking, and pubbing. I read where that's busy season but don't have a good feel for what kind of impact that would have on our visit. I'd book the lodging way in advance so that shouldn't be an issue. Would it mean we'd have to eat at irregular hours at the popular pubs? Would the scenic drives (Beara, Dingle, for example) be overrun with buses and cars making it a PITA? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Dave

Radar,

If you have a firm itinerary and reservations for your lodgings you should be fine in August. There can be lots of traffic in very popular areas like the Ring of Kerry. However, it really depends on what is on and whether there are festivals in the area. You can also do scenic drives in the opposite way that the usual tourists do them and not have to contend with the traffic too much. Another thing to do would be to stay in less-traveled areas.

Pubs can be very crowded especially if they have music or on weekends. But you can always get reservations at restaurants for the approximate times you want. You won't be eating lunch at midinght!

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Michele

radar, we went to Ireland in July which is also a busy month. I researched festivals and then carefully avoided them!!!

I chose the Dingle Peninsula for us because the Ring of Kerry is known for more bus traffic in high season. We had no problem at all with "crowds" in Dingle and found the Dingle peninsula a delightful drive. I purposely planned to be in Dingle on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday nights, in order to avoid the weekend which was more likely to be crowded (most tourist areas are more crowded on weekends we find wherever we travel).

Enjoy Ireland! We traveled in the SW, W, and also in Northern Ireland. We have fond memories of it all.

If you plan an itinerary with a nice mix of some "must-see" places and also some slightly off-the-beaten-path places, summer in Ireland is lovely and you will find some peaceful spots. Most crowded spots for us were Cliffs of Moher and the Giant's Causeway, but we still enjoyed them.

I should add that the LEAST crowded county we explored was County Mayo...that is one of the reasons I included it. It was peaceful and lovely...Achill Island was a nice day-trip...and staying in Westport had the advantage of fun lively pubs.
