We leave for Dublin in a couple of weeks and after spending 3 days in Dublin we pick up our car. We then have 3 days to drive to Shannon (we want to take our time and see what we can find). Any suggestions or opinions on:
--Is Birr Castle (and telescope) worth the visit
--Is Athy a good spot to stop for the night (and if so, any B&B suggestions)?
--How about Ballaghmore Castle, worth seeing and staying at Ballahmore House?
--We were thinking of a drive around lake Lough Derg. Any opinions?
You must keep in mind that not everything is open at the time of year you are traveling to Ireland. A visit to Birr Castle is mostly for the gardens, which will be bare in the winter. Birr Castle is not open to the public.
Because of when you are going I suggest Kilkenny and Cashel, with perhaps a stop at Cahir Castle (just south of Cashel). They are both good inland bases with day trips available.
The drive around Lough Derg can be lovely if the weather cooperates.
We did Michele's suggestion - Kilkenny and Rock of Cashel and it worked out nicely for us. We just didn't have time to also see Cahir Castle. On the way, we visited Kilkenny Crystal Factory. The gift shop was open for us, but not the actual factory. It is very small , but the owner (?) gave us an overview on the process.
I'd go with Michele's suggestion too. Birr doesn't make a good winter stop. I haven't been to Ballaghmore. Lough Derg really is a beautiful drive...even if you only do part of it. In the winter many of the craft shops along the route might not be open.
The Midlands around Kilkenny and Cashel are quite beautiful and lots to do. I know Michele recommends a sheep farm near Cashel in her book that has always caught my attention.
The sheep farm is Dualla House: http://www.duallahouse.com/ It is a very old farmhouse with lovely hosts. I really enjoyed seeing the sheep herded by the dogs and having tea and scones in front of a fire in the parlor. I don't think it opens till mid-March but if someone inquires about spending multiple nights in winter....who knows? It is worth a try.
