fishing & riding day trips

My wife and I will be in Ireland and want to spend 1 day enjoying our hobbies. Our bases will be Galway, Killarney, Kinsale and Kilkenny, so these or the surrounding areas will be fine. I like to flyfish for trout and she would like to ride a horse on a scenic path along the water or in the hills or better, both.

Any tips on how and with whom to arrange these activities; we will need all or most of the gear since we hope to be packing light. We also appreciate value and would rather not pay top dollor (or euro) unless it is clearly worth the extra for the experience.

Thanks,

jb

jb,

Welcome to the forum. Fly-fishing will depend on time of year. The tourist offices in the various places you are visiting can advise you as to guides or you can do some pre-trip work to find some. Here are some links for you to investigate:

http://www.cfb.ie/

http://www.wrfb.ie/

Killarney Riding Stables has a good reputation and takes riders through Killarney National Park and by the lakes: http://www.horsevacationireland.com/

A place near Kilkenny that would cater to you both is Mount Juliet: http://www.mountjuliet.ie/

That should get you started.

RE: fishing & riding day trips

Thanks Michele! I have contacted them via e-mail but might you know if their fishing and riding is open to the public or solely for their guest. I was there in 2000 and they did let us plebs into the pub for lunch. It was an extraodinary property and currently, we are considering staying at a garden B&B just down the road.

FYI: looking forward to receiving your book and, based on your comments, have booked 4 nights at Lawndale B&B in Galway.

Slainte,

jb

jb,

I don't know for certain if Mount Juliet's facilities are open to "non residents" as they say in Ireland. An email inquiry will find out the real scoop on that. They have a very nice buffet lunch at the golf club there on Sundays.

I hope you get a room overlooking Galway Bay at Lawndale. Margaret will take great care of you. If you tell her that I recommended her B&B she will fuss over you like your auntie! I have known her for ages and Lawndale is one of the few original B&Bs that I still have in my book from the very first edition. If you don't mind a 15-20 minute walk you can even get into Galway City from her close-in location in Salthill.

Hi Michele,

Glad we will be in good hands at Lawndale. Might you have Margaret's e-mail address or phone # so I can contact her and tell her you sent us and see about that room with a view.

Many thanks,

JB

JB,

Margaret is an old-fashioned lady and has no use for those new-fangled computers. She doesn't have an email address or website. This is her phone number: 091 586-676. To dial from the US: 011-353-91-586-676. Remember it is 5 hours later in Ireland than EST!

If she is full I would recommend Marless House: http://www.marlesshouse.com/

Dear Michele,

You are the best! Turns out that Mt. Juliet fishing and riding are available to "non-residents" and, for the fishing, the rates for outfitting and guides are most reasonable considering the
opportunity. (a bit less than a sierra guide trip in California)
I booked just by calling the reception desk and they offered to have the equestrian center contact my wife about riding.

Thanks again,

jb

ps:

Thanks to you we have a bay-view room at Lawndale and a romantic last-nights stay at Bunratty Lodge. I regret not having booked Lawndale via phone with Margaret (booked on-line)since she will lose 10%. The reason we opted not to do vouchers this time was to give the innkeepers a better share of the rent. Well...live and learn.
