My wife is an elementary school librarian; she has vacation March 31-April 8(Easter). I am retired. We would like to take an Ireland "fly and drive" vacation using B&B's and hotels. Are many attractions closed this week? We would work with members of this forum and Michele to build an itnerary if there are no major issues. Should we wait til summer? We don't like crowds. Comments please, MadBax
I've never been there on that week, but my understanding is that your only serious issue will be Good Friday. Most restaurants and pubs will be closed that day but the scenery is always open. You might want to choose to stay at a hotel that night. Their restaurant would be open. I think there are quite a few B&Bs open that day.
Since you'll be flying out on Sunday, you should be fine. Ireland celebrates Easter Monday.
Welcome to the forum. I have been in Ireland over Easter holidays and as Bill says Good Friday is the only problem day. Depending on where you are some things may be open. For instance when I was there the Foynes Flying Boat Museum was open. I am currently doing an itinerary for some clients who will do a tour of Newgrange and the Hill of Tara on GF from Dublin. Pubs and most restaurants will be closed with the exception of hotel restaurants. Once again, this depends on where you are on that day. But making reservations for meals at a hotel will be a safe bet.
As long as you are willing to work around GF you should be fine. You should be looking at reservations in popular places during the long Easter weekend. Otherwise, you are fine to go in April.
Thank you for your prompt replies. My wife and I are still discussing when to go. There are some concerns about the weather and attractions that are closed on Good Friday.
