Cleung,

I was in Ireland from 28 Nov thru 3 Dec.  This was the first time for me to drive in Europe and for it being my first time and knowing how to drive stick, I did real good.  If you have never driven before, allow some time to take a stroll around the airport a bit.  Just remember to always yield the right away, and your traffic comes from the right, not your left!  You will encounter many round abouts going up.

I drove to Ballinrobe which is along the same route you take.  The drive was not too bad going up.  Signs are a bit scarce, so pay attention and don;t be afraid to stop and ask questions...people are soooooo  nice, plus there was a lot of road construction going up, so many tight squeezes.  It took me about 2 hours to go to Ballinrobe, you might be looking at 2 and half maybe 3 hours depnding on the day you are driving.  I went to Castlebar, and I think it was on the N84 route if I remember right.

You will ahve a nice drive, just take your time and again stop and ask questions when in doubt, and be specific on where you are going so they can help you.  The rental car people are also eager to offer some suggestions on how to get to your destination.  Make sure you check you car real good for dings and nicks and make sure they note it!!

Are you visiting a freind?

Thanks for your comments.  I will be attending an event in  Castlebar but may spend a few days driving around the area.

During the short period I was in Ballinrobe, just some recommendations:

Visit:

ASHFORD CASTLE Ronald Reagan stayed there and the Golf Course is awesome!  Also right on the water ways.

Town of CONG  (The QUIET MAN starring John Wayne  WAS FILMED THERE)

If you want some good shopping  GALWAY was awesome!

Good luck!

Cleung,

Lesman has given you some great advice for driving from Shannon to Castlebar. I think it will probably take you three hours. The roundabouts can be confusing. Just remember to yield to the traffic in the circle and to travel in a clockwise manner. Use your turn signal when taking your exit road off the circle.

While in Castlebar be sure to see the Museum of Country Life. It is free and very interesting.
