To begin with, this was our 7th trip to Ireland, and it was awesome, as always. Our accommodations are always very important to us, as we do spend a lot of down time in them. Usually we are quite busy during the day, and love to have a nice BandB/Guesthouse to "come home to". So a comfortable sitting area is important and so are congenial hosts. Out of 13 booked, I was only disappointed in three. Joy's Rockside, Cashel; Hillcrest BandB, Kilrush; and deFlorres Band B, Athlone. Here goes:
South Lodge BandB, Portmarnock (Dublin area), 4 nights, 38.50 Eurospp/per night: We have stayed here before and always enjoy it. Right on the bus line to Dublin Centre. Colin and Pat Burton are great hosts. Comfortable beds, good-sized rooms. This was the carriage house for the Jameson family, now Portmarnock Links Hotel. Quaint cottage and rooms. Kleenex, alarm clock, face cloths upon request, simple Irish breakfast with fruit and juice (served in Waterford glasses!) and the usual breads. Rated: 8, will stay here again.
Tudor Lodge BandB, Laragh, Wicklow; 2 nights, 42.50 pp/per night: We enjoyed this BandB very much. Chris is a congenial host, with Jane and Deidre in the background. Delightful setting on the Avondale River, where you can sit on the deck and enjoy the sounds of the river. Clean, spacious room with a double and a single on the main floor and a semi-private entrance. Breakfast quite extensive, fruits, cheeses, cold cuts, yogurt, many cereals. Usual tea/coffee, breads. The sitting room was available for the guests, but the main living room was not (Family uses this, is a smoking room). Kleenex, no clock or facecloths available. Has had some bad reviews due to former Lithuanian owners who were unfriendly and apparently did not keep up the house. Chris is adding a new patio and upgrading the back area. Rated 9, would stay here again.
Joy's Rockside House, Cashel, Tipperary, i night, 40Eurospp/per night: We found this to be disappointing. We enjoyed being so close to the Rock, but the room needed heavier drapes to shut out the streetlights. So, do ask for the room at the back/side of rhe house, which also has a wonderful view of The Rock at night. Joy was quite a brusque person, although very helpful. When we arrived she introduced herself, showed us the direction of the dining room and the sitting room (which was very uncomfortable), and the asked for her payment! There was a sign on the table, Payment Upon Arrival. (Michele, has she probably been "stiffed", before for want of a better word?). It did raise our eyebrows a little, needless to say. The next morning, we sat down at a table for two, of course, but were asked to move to a table for 4, I still can't figure out why. Then, at about 9:20 am we were going to go up to The Rock, walk around--no tour, as we have been here many times before. She insisted we bring our suitcases downstairs then, because she had someone coming in to clean our room at !0:00. We did, but left a little upset at her abruptness. Breakfast was routine with only juice and Irish breakfast and the usual. Rated 5, would not stay here again.
Earls Court House, Killarney, 50Eurospp/per night, 4 nights. Awesome! We were upgraded form a Deluxe Balcony to a large King Room with a HUGE bathroom and a tub. Tea and home-baked goodies upon arrival, in the big and comfortable sitting room. Had Internet access for all guests, which was just great, got caught up on Home and Friends at our leisure. Breakfast was expansive, with 3 juices; 4 different kinds of fruit; porridge, dry cereals, hot breakfast menu of Irish, all kinds of eggs, French Toast, Omelettes, Pancakes. Looked forward to every morning! Laundry available for 12.50 Euros (sent out), per laundry bag, washed, dried and folded . Hair Salon right next door, check with Emer. 15Euros for a shampoo and set. Emer and Stephanie were friendly and helpful. Toiletries, faceclothes, clock, fluffy bathtowels. complimentary bottles of water, tea/coffee service in room. Would definitely stay here again! Rated: 10!
The Shores Country House, Castlegregory, Dingle, 40Eurospp/per night, 2 nights. Unbelievable!! Annette is such a gracious and delightful hostess, will sit down and talk, talk, and talk some more. This has to be the most delightful home in Ireland. All this, and she is a also a GOURMET cook! We had a front downstairs double with a BATHTUB. As you can tell, I love my baths. I could have spent the rest of the month right here. Comfortable sitting room, enchanting dining room, I am only sorry she was not serving dinners--her daughter was still in school and her assistant had an ill mother. Room was compact with a nice sofa at the foot of the double, comfortable bed. Clock, Kleenex, facecloths, tea/coffee service. Breakfast was to die for. We both had the dried fruit compote, porridge, Ed had Pancakes, I had the Ham, Cheese Croissant twice. Served gourmet style on square double plates. My Goodness, did we feel special. Would I stay here again? In a heartbeat, but next time, maybe a week! Rated 10++.
I shall stop now, and continue, hopefully, tomorrow.
Many thanks for starting your trip report with a critique of your lodgings. I'm glad most of them worked out well for you.
There is a lot going on behind the scenes at B&Bs that the average person never hears of. More and more B&Bs are being "stiffed" by people at an alarming rate. Not only that but being robbed and having things taken from their houses. One B&B owner returned home to find her whole house cleaned out down to the sheets and furniture! I think in the future you will see many more asking for payment when checking in. They can only get burned so many times before either going out of business or changing the way they do business. And of course, B&Bs are small and can't absorb such costs like the large hotel chains can. Mind you, they don't like having to do it but it is a reality they must deal with every day.
I'm glad to hear that Tudor Lodge is now in good hands. I will have to stop by to meet the new owners next time I am in the area. I am delighted you got an upgrade at Earl's Court and that you enjoyed The Shores so much. Too bad you couldn't have dinner there as it would have been the gastronomical highlight of your trip. I was just going through all my photos to index them before putting them on my website and my photos of the food at The Shores had my mouth watering.
I am looking forward to hearing more when you have the time.
What a shame we have these dishonest people traveling, especially in Ireland. Most of these BandBs are run by decent, friendly and caring hosts. You are no doubt right, more establishments will be asking for prepayment.
Hillcrest View BandB, Kilrush, Clare: 1 night, 35Eurospp/per night. We arrived here around 3 pm, coming from Castlegregory (we had e-mailed Ethna we would be in around that time), and no one was home. No note, they came home at 4pm, without a "Sorry, you had to wait". The guest's lounge was closed, due to no furniture, it being removed a few days before new arrived. Finally, Ethna let me into another room, telling me I had to be out by 7:30pm. Breakfast was fine; fruit, juice, menu- I had a nice omelette, Ed had pancakes. Guestroom very small. I think Ethna should revise the website, very misleading. Rated a 5, I would not stay here again.
Drumcreehy House, Ballyvaughn, Clare: 2 nights, 40Eurospp/per night. Wonderful accommodations! We had the Fushia Room, looking out on the Burren and the nice backyard. Balcony, comfortable bed, large room. Sitting room downstairs was very comfortable for reading and visiting. "Honesty' Bar (one signs for soft drinks, wine, beer) and tea room. Tea/coffee and biscuits available to have in the tea room ( tables and chairs), or to take to room. Awesome breakfast sidebar with about 9 different fruits, 3 juices, Croissants and breads, various cold meats, cheeses, dry cereals. Porridge upon request. Hot breakfast menu. Armin, a very friendly and helpful host, Bernadette seems to be very busy with two small children to care for. Rated a 10. Would definitely stay here again, if only for the breakfasts! As you can probably tell it is my favorite meal!
Michaeleen's Manor Band B, Cong, Mayo: 2 nights, 35Eurospp/per night. A neat experience if you are a "The Quiet Man" follower. New house, with pictures taken from the film, throughout the house. Also, small wooden plaques with quotes from the films actors everywhere. This is a must, for fans of the film. Positives are very clean appearing rooms, and good sized. Breakfast was very good with the usual fruits, juices, breads, hot items. The sitting room had a flat screen, large HDTV, with cable--actually got to see Fox News for the only time in a 5 week trip! The negatives--Margaret is not a very good housekeeper. Old coffee in the pot, congealed cream in individual containers, towels not changed- just hung up from the floor. No clock, Kleenex, facecloths. NO mattress pad on bed, bed not straightened up. No sauna available. Rated 4. I would not stay here again. But for one night, a " movie fan" would love it. Does that make sense?
Mallmore Country House, Clifden, Galway: 3 nights, 40Eurospp/per night. Delightful house. Lots of history here, due to the orginal owners were the D'Arcy family. They built the town of Clifden. This is a middle class Georgian building that was the hunting lodge of byegone days. Very interesting architecture. Very large room with a double and two twins. Bay window, with two comfortable chairs and table, overlooking Clifden Bay. Tea/coffee service in comfortable sitting room (with peat fire!), availabe to take to room. No facecloths or Kleenex. Breakfast good with fruits and juices, menu. This was quite a fascinating house, ask for its history. Alan and Kathleen were very friendly and eager to help with surrounding area info. Rated a 9. I would definetly stay here again.
THanks for the B&B critique. I hadn't had a chance to say Welcome Home before now. So when are you planning to head back? It is a shame that a dishonset few are spoiling it for everyone. I cannot believe that someone could strip a house like that!
Sorry this is taking so long, but have been away from the computer for awhile. To continue:
The Bervie, Achill, Mayo: 3 nights, 60Euros pp/per night. I think this tariff is a little steep. Liz and John are remarlable hosts, so friendly and eager to help. I realize Achill is a holiday area for the Irish, and that is why the rate is no doubt so high. Our room had a wonderful view of the water, I think it was #16, at the very end of the house. With Kleenex, toiletries, no clock, Michele, we saw the room you usually get, isn't it the one Liz was born in? #11? My problem was with the breakfast--only fruit was PRUNES ( and you can eat only so many of them! ), orange juice, and a choice of egg dishes. I enjoyed the Irish fry. It just seemed that with both of them being exceptional chefs, there would be more choices. We did have dinner one night, with wonderful soup and a veal dish. One other night, we just had the soup, having been to Ceide' Fields all day. The sitting area was delightful, and the sun room was a great place to have that welcoming afternoon tea and goodies. A drawback was there were no tea/coffee facilities in the room--I had to bother them each day for afternoon tea, which they gladly brought the service to our room. I think they put all their energy into the evening meal. Forgot to mention that breakfast wasn't until 9o'clock!! Very late for early risers, like ourselves. I would definitely stay here again, if they ever have a better rate. Rated a 9, because of the breakfast and no tea/coffee in room. I really sound picky, don't I? Don't answer!
Rosdarrig Bed and Breakfast, Boyle, Roscommon: 1 night,32.50Euros pp/per night. A real find! Brenda is a wonderful host(ess?), has a very clean home with a beautiful front garden, on the main road, but not too noisy. We had a large room upstairs, overlooking the garden, with a double and a single. Larger sized bathroom with shower, toiletries. Kleenex, clock. Toiletries ( bar soap- as opposed to bottle of liquid soap), shampoo in shower. Breakfast had a nice choice of fruits and juices, selection of hot items. Very pleasant dining room overlooking the garden. I would definitely stay here again. Rated a 9.
DePorres Bed and Breakfast, Athlone, Westmeath: 35Euros pp/per night, 2 nights. This was a disappointment, one reason because we were booked into Cornamagh House and Gardens for these two nights, and we received an e-mail in Ireland that Brian would be out of town and he had booked us with Catherine at DePorres BandB. The other reason was the house was not up to our "standards", it being an older home with a small room ( and a terrible bed!), and overlooking the garage. Catherine was very nice, a little aloof, but helpful. Nice sitting room to read in. Breakfast was very nice with several fruits, juices, small menu, usual breads-- in a nice older dinging room. I would not stay here again, we prefer a lighter, more modern home to relax in for a couple days. Rated a 5.
Highfield House, Trim,Meath: 40Euros pp/per night, 1 night. This was a surprise, for we had expected a poor experience, from some reviews. I had tried to rebook elsewhere, but to no avail. We enjoyed the one night stay, Geraldine was quite friendly, when I found time to converse. She said they have a lot of Rick Steves travellers, and are pretty well-booked with them all the time. Our room was large, upstairs, overlooking the front, with a great view of the gardens and surrounding vista. Kleenex, clock radio, toiletries. This is a grand old manor house, with much history, and interesting rooms. Breakfast room was very small, only three tables. Fortunately, we are always the first to breakfast, so had a table to ourselves. Various fruits and juices, menu for hot items. They are remodeling the house, making a much larger breakfast room and sitting room.I would stay here again. Rated a 9.
So, there it is, finally. Hope this is of some help to all you Ireland travellers. Sorry to be so long in completing the "critique".
I loved reading your reviews. I'm sure it will be very helpful for future tavellers to Ireland. You live in the Seattle area don't you? I'm asking because I'd love to ask some questions about accommodations in this area. If not, I wish you did as I like your reviews so much. Almost as good as Micheles.
We do live near Seattle, a little south, in Graham. We just moved down here a couple years ago, after having lived in Renton ( a half hour from downtown Seattle) for about 30 years. Would be happy to answer any questions. Where do you live?
Many thanks for the new critiques. I was in room 11 at Bervie and also the one next to it. My husband and I are so used to a king bed that when in Ireland we go for twins. For us a double is just too cramped. Actually I have had earlier breakfast there and was not the first one eating. Perhaps their schedule was off for some reason. Did you get to walk the beach?
I live on Bainbridge. I want to apologize to Michele for using her web-site for personal info. My address is :jachatham@comcast.net It would be nice if we could chat.
Hi Helen, We stayed at Rosdarrig, too, and in the same room you did. We loved it and thought Brenda was just wonderful. We'll definitely stay there again, too.
Wonderful recap of B&Bs which I will note for use the next time I'm in Ireland. I always stay in B&Bs when travelling there, and your recommendations give me some peace of mind when booking in those locales. Great information -- thanks.
What a wonderful critique of the various B&B's ! Your itinerary is similar to the one my husband and I are planning for November and this has helped us out quite a bit. May I ask if you rented a car and, if so, where did you find the best deal?
Hi Michele...Yes, I certainly did walk the beach--about 4 times. I so enjoyed Achill, I can understand why the Irish flock to the seaside in the summer! We did the Atlantic Drive, Deserted Village, drove up Mweelin mountain. I could really spend a week there. Of course, it helped ro have glorious weather!
Bit, Jeanne, Joan, Sidz and Marnie...It has always helped me out to read BandB reviews, so I am happy you all appreciated the reports.
Marnie, it took me awhile to find the car rental info as DH had the file hidden somewhere! We used National Car Rental, had a 2007 Toyota that was somewhat like a van, but not a big one. Ed is a big guy, so likes a larger car. We paid $408 for 28 days, with an additional $158 at the check-in, the latter for our World Master Card insurance fee and extra road taxes, etc. We had applied for the World Master Card after we found out our Visa wouldn't cover the CDW. We picked it up at the Dublin airport and left it off there. Hope this is of some help.
Enjoyed your B&B reviews. Agreed B&Bs are in general a suitable way to tour Ireland. The name Laoghaire - did you get that from Dun Laoghaire - the port in Dublin? Happy holidays, Brian.
Laoghaire: I know your post is several years old, but I am enjoying reading it! I love the way you have gathered all your accommodation reviews on one post like this...it's fun to read your comparisons. That's a unique way to post. I love it! I like your candid opinions...it's refreshing.
